Creative and Critical Thinking with Clouds

This week, first graders listened to a story called Cloud Spinners from the PETS curriculum which encourages students to brainstorm creatively. They learned that the ideas during a brainstorm are like raindrops in a storm and to come up with as many as possible. Students did their own brainstorming about things that are round or go around.

Some of the ideas students had were so creative. My personal favorites were hula hoop, football (because when you throw it, it spins) and planets. I mean talk about thinking outside of the box!

After we brainstormed together, students were given a sheet with some abstract lines and challenged to think creatively and come up with something the lines could be. They were encouraged to add to the drawings to make it look like something new.

Below are some examples. Click on each picture to see what the students drew (if you can't tell already).

Some of their ideas were unlike anything I would have thought of! The creativity of these young scholars is truly amazing. Stay tuned for more creative and critical thinking posts!
