Should We Have Zoos?

Before starting our novel study on The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, students explored the topic of zoos. Specifically, should we have zoos? Are they good or bad?

Students read two articles with opposing points of view and outline the arguments using a tree map. Students labeled the top of the map with the point of view and then dissected the argument by providing reasons and details to support each reason.

After they completed their maps, groups responded to the question: Why is the information on this map important?

Finally, we played tug of war? :) When asked, Should we have zoos?, students had to pick a side a provide their own reasons. Little did they know that after they picked a side, I was going to have them switch sides. After generating reasons, we grouped these according to similar ideas. Then, we placed them on our tug of war rope with the strongest 'tugs' on the ends and weaker 'tugs' toward the middle.

Many students were staunchly opposed to zoos after completing this activity. Two even asked if they could write a letter to the government asking for all zoos to be shut down! Kids have strong opinions. We need to give them an outlet to share them!
