Escape Room Inspired by Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library
Fifth grade finally launched their escape room project! They've worked so hard to create a truly puzzling experience for their participants. Thanks to Donors Choose, we received a small group set of the novel. Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library, by Chris Grabenstein and several items to build our own escape room like lock boxes, various kinds of locks and UV flashlights. Students chose the theme - Jumanji: Escape from the Jungle. Then, we did research about the popularity of escape room and how to plan and build our own. Students then created a story map of each stage of the game.
Here they are in the final days before trying to turn an ordinary classroom into a jungle!
On Thursday, we did a practice run of the escape room with my fourth graders. It was a kick to watch them try to piece all of the clues together. But, it also helped the fifth graders work out any kinks - one of our clues was mixed up and another needed a little clarity. I wish I had pictures or a video of the fourth graders, but I was caught up in their excitement. On Friday, they invited adults to come try it out! That action was caught on camera, a 360 camera by Mr. Stein. Check out the video below.
After all was said and done, the students were really proud of their hard work, as they should be! Students had to work with one another to make sure all the pieces were in place. And, they definitely did divergent and convergent thinking! I can't wait to do a similar project again.
