My Flag
As a getting reacquainted activity to start the school year, fourth graders designed their own flag, as a representation of themselves. To start, we studied the metaphorical associations we make with colors, i.e. purple is associated with royalty and red is associated with strength.
After learning about these associations, students did some critical thinking about symbols and characters. We looked at the fictional Disney character, Maleficent, and determined why the illustrators used colors such as black, purple and green when drawing her. Black for power and evil, purple for mystery and green for envy. We also looked at the US Marine Corps logo. Students determined red was used to represent strength, black for power and yellow for hope.
Then, students designed their own flag with colors that represent who they are. Each flag was unique, just like their designers.
Finally, students presented their flags to the group guided by a public speaking template.
Most students were worried about presenting, so we used a name generator to select who would present. We had a little fun testing our mind-control powers on the name generator. :)
