January Reads
One month down for my 2018 resolution to read three books a month. This month, I read The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, Matilda by Roald Dahl and Making Thinking Visible: How to Promote Engagement, Understanding and Independence for All Learners by Ron Ritchhart, Mark Church and Karin Morrison.
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
This novel, based on a true story, is an absolute must read. Told from the perspective of a gorilla who has been in captivity for 27 years, the author does an amazing job making you understand the frustration, stress and relief experienced by Ivan.
It is beautiful and tragic but with a happy ending. A perfect read for any age, it tops my list of favorite books. I can't wait to share this book with students.
Matilda by Roald Dahl
Another of Roald Dahl's books made my list this month. I am rereading some of my favorites in preparation for the multi-grade level book study I plan to do with some of his best books, including Matilda.
Roald Dahl's books always revolve around a child hero and adult villian. I love the power he puts into his young characters where they, ultimately, overcome their obstacles using their will and intellect.
Making Thinking Visible: How to Promote
Engagement, Understanding and Independence for All Learners by Ron Ritchhart,
Mark Church and Karin Morrison
I'm not sure any other book I have read thus far has had such an impact on my teaching. The routines offered in this book are easy to employ and have students thinking on such a high level.
This is a great book for all teachers looking to access their students' thinking no matter the students' ability. This can be used by every teacher in a variety of subjects.
