The Three Little...

During first grade enrichment, we learned about the history of storytelling. We also met a character name Yolanda the Yarnspinner, from the Primary Education Thinking Skills curriculum, who is a fantastic storyteller because she uses colorful words.

Students put their own story telling skills to work with our most recent project. First, we retold the story of The 3 Little Pigs using just six symbols to represent different events in the story. After, we reflected on our story telling and realized that we included a lot more detail than what was shown in the symbol. Then, we read The 3 Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas. Students then created the own symbols to help retell this other version of the story.

Finally, I challenged students to come up with their own version of The 3 Little Pigs. These first graders were so creative in their thinking! Check out some of their symbols below.

After they drew their symbols, it was time to tell their story. Using their oral story telling skills, students told their own "3 Little..." stories to their classmates.

They did such an amazing job and I was so proud of the ones who were brave enough to tell their story in front of the class! We are still working on developing our story with details and sequence.
